BANANA ISLAND DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

2014 marks one hundred and ninety four years of the settlement of freed and liberated enslaved people and their descendants on Banana Island in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The principle occupation of the islanders are farming and fishing. Banana Island could be a health resort of which much use can be made. It is believed when the epidemic of influenza raged in 1918 at the end of WW 1, it was only in Banana Island, so far as is known, that there were no deaths.
The spirit of adventure and pursuit of economic wealth has dwindled the population of Banana Island considerably. The Island is mostly inhabited by the elderly; younger people make crossings ever so often between the city and the dying Island. For the good of the people of Banana Island, in order to preserve the history, heritage and culture of the people, the Carlton-Carew EP Foundation has arisen to help rebuild Banana Island, with the help of others like you, this dream could be realized.
Our projects are: a community cultural center, a museum and library of slavery, which is none existent in West Africa, a memorial wall of ancestors,a nature trail, to maintain a small health center, and primary school. Our major projects are the Community Cultural Center, Museum and Library, Memorial Wall and Nature Trail.
On this 5.3 mile Island, one can still find a slave fort, cannons, grave yard of slave traders, a 19th century church and bell.
Please help us to rebuild and reestablish Banana Island with its potential for tourism and education, while uplifting the lives of and preserving the history, heritage and culture of a community of descendants of enslaved people.

Photos below, 2 buildings, approximately 3000 square feet each. Estimated construction cost on land that has already been donated for this project, is 1.5 million.

Please give generously to help the people of Banana Island.
